BCS Essentials Certificate in Artificial Intelligence
Take your first steps in AI training to understand the principles of AI, its benefits and risks, and the processes behind machine learning.
Who is it for?
- Individuals with an interest in (or a need to implement) AI in an organisation, especially those working in areas such as science, engineering, knowledge engineering, finance, or IT services.
- Middle and senior managers running or assembling teams to create AI dependent applications and services, that need to understand the context of AI in an industrial setting.
Entry requirements
- There are no entry requirements for this certification. Training with a BCS accredited training provider is highly recommended.

- the terminology and general principles, including benefits and types of AI
- the basic process of machine learning (ML)
- the challenges and risks associated with an AI project
- the future of AI and humans in work

Please note: there are two versions of this syllabus live: version 1.2 and the new version 2.0 which launched in September 2024. Both versions of the exam can be booked but please note the last date for booking v1.2 and v1.0 is 25 April 2025. The v1.0 and v1.2 exams must be sat by 29 May 2025. From 30 May 2025, v2.0 will be the only version of the exam which can be sat.
What format is the exam?
- 30 minute ‘closed book’ with 20 multiple choice questions
- Pass mark is 65% (13/20)
