Honorary Fellowship of BCS
Honorary Fellowship is awarded to individuals who’ve made an outstanding contribution to BCS, over a considerable length of time, helping us meet our charitable objects.
The award was first approved in 1969, and the first elections to Honorary Fellowship were made in the same year. Since then, we’ve bestowed the title to over 100 men and women for their valuable work and commitment.
You don’t have to be a BCS member to be nominated - our Community Board is responsible for proposing suitable candidates and election is made by Trustee Board resolution. (We award Honorary Fellowship of BCS under Bye-law 8 of our royal charter, and Trustee Board regulation 1.3.)
BCS Honorary Fellowship - candidate criteria
When considering a candidate for the position of Honorary Fellow, our Community and Trustee Boards are mindful of the following:
- There are no restrictions to what’s considered appropriate with regards the nature of a nominee’s work or their area of activity within BCS, though their contribution must benefit BCS as a whole and not simply the area in which it’s made.
- Both the contribution to BCS and the stature of the nominee should be comparable with the standard set by previous recipients of the title.
- There’s no limit to the number of Honorary Fellows elected, though it’s expected that no more than two are awarded in any one year.
- To be elected, a nomination must be on the Trustee Board agenda, and at least three quarters of those present must resolve in favour.
