Synopsis

Imagine a future where doctors have access to a constantly updated digital copy of a patient, enabling them to predict, prevent, and treat diseases more effectively and efficiently.

This transformative vision has the potential to unlock a future of personalised and proactive healthcare for all.

A Human Digital Twin (HDT) - also referred to as a digital twin of a patient, patient twin, or virtual patient - is a sophisticated computer-generated model that encapsulates an individual’s health and medical history.

The implementation of HDT within Hywel Dda University Health Board (HDUHB) represents a transformative step towards enhancing healthcare delivery and patient outcomes across the West and mid-Wales.

As healthcare systems evolve to meet the demands of modern medicine, the concept of HDT provides a promising framework for revolutionising the management, analysis, and use of patient data within the healthcare ecosystem.

This would enhance patient outcomes, improve operational efficiency, and stimulate innovation within the healthcare sector.

About the speaker

Dr Praboda Rajapaksha is a Lecturer in Health Data Science at Aberystwyth University, a Data Scientist at HDUHB, NHS Wales, and an Adjunct Professor at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris), France.

After completing her PhD in Computer Science at IP Paris, she joined the same institute as a postdoctoral research fellow.

She obtained her M.Eng. in Computer Science from AIT, Thailand, her M.Sc. in Communication Networks and Services from IMT, France, and her B.Eng. in Computer Engineering from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. With over nine years of research experience, she has established herself as an expert in data science.

Dr Rajapaksha has been actively involved in various European projects (ITEA, BPI, Horizon) and French national initiatives (FUI) and is currently leading a UKRI EPSRC project. Recently, she initiated an innovative collaboration with HDUHB to implement Patient Digital Twin (PDT) technology to transform healthcare delivery across West and mid-Wales.
