Join us in conversation with Beth Clarke, award-winning software engineer, committee member of the BCS Special Interest Group in Software Testing (SIGiST), and PhD researcher working to ensure a sustainable space environment.

In this fireside chat, we will discuss:

About the speakers

Guest: Beth Clarke (she/her)

Is a PhD student and award-winning software engineer with a background in astrophysics.

After graduating from the University of Bath, she retrained through a Software Developer Apprenticeship and now has over 5 years of experience as a safety-critical software engineer, DevOps specialist, and test lead.

She has shared her expertise through various talks at national and international conferences and article publications, aiming to inspire the current and future generations of scientists and tech professionals.

Beth is currently at the University of Strathclyde researching how distributed ledger technologies could transform satellites into autonomous communities, ensuring sustainable space exploration.

Passionate about diversity in STEM, Beth has founded women’s networks, served as Vice Chair of the WISE Young Professionals’ Board, engaged in extensive outreach work, and currently sits on the committee for the BCS Special Interest Group in Software Testing (SIGiST).

Her achievements include being a finalist in the IET’s Young Woman Engineer of the Year awards, winning Computer Weekly’s Rising Star in Tech, and the EveryWoman in Technology Rising Star Award.

Jo StansfieldInterviewer: Jo Stansfield FHCA, MBCS - Founder and Director of Inclusioneering Limited, BCS Women Co-Chair and BCS Trustee Jo is an independent Diversity, Equity and Inclusion consultant, supporting technology and engineering organisations. She has held leadership roles in industry, including as Director for People Data and Insights at a leading FTSE 100 technology firm. Alongside this, Jo holds a number of voluntary positions.

She is a Trustee and member of Council for BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, co-chair of BCS Women, Fellow of AI ethics and audit charity, ForHumanity, and serves on the Industry Advisory Board for Techup Skills Bootcamp. Jo began her career as an engineer, developing enterprise software for global industry, spanning oil & gas, automotive, aerospace and marine sectors.

Having pivoted her focus from the technical to human dimensions of engineering, Jo now works as a Business Psychologist. She holds an MSc in Organisational and Business Psychology, with thesis research topic “Lessons for Gender and Racial Diversity within Technology”. She brings deep understanding of the engineering culture, and lived experience as a woman within it, to her work in support of diversity and inclusion in tech and engineering domains.
