About the speaker

Robert Bilsland

Robert is a senior C# software engineer and a specialist in handling, processing, storing and displaying spatial information. He was the lead developer on an application that covered the whole of the UK using over 33 million polygons, across multiple categories that were visualised on a map along with addition associated information. He also developed mapping functionality for a vehicle tracking application where location boundaries were drawn and stored, routes calculated from A to B with alerts for off route vehicles.

Robert has over 20 years’ experience in developing web applications using Microsoft technologies and over 30 years’ experience in software development within the IT industry, from mainframes through desktop PCs to web applications. He is also an enthusiastic volunteer educator, running an after-school Code Club to teach the top years of primary school the basics of Computational Thinking and programming, putting his years of experience to use. At a corporate level he shares his experience with the next generation of employees to help develop their skills through mentoring.
