Synopsis

This event is composed of five speakers presenting the following topics:

  1. Alex Matheson: "Applied AI and the Law: The New Legal Challenges Arising with Artificial Neural Networks Overtaking Expert Systems" This talk explores the potential of AI in revolutionizing professional services, given regulatory challenges. While some believe AI will drastically change knowledge work, others see its impact as more limited. This presentation will examine two key AI technologies: expert systems with decision trees, already somewhat used in professional services, and artificial neural networks with vast learning potential, but with less current application.
  2. Antonio Hidalgo-Landa: "Neurodiversity and AI: Is Genuine Understanding Unlikely to Emerge in Large Language Models?" The initial hysteria has waned, and we no longer hear as much about machines taking over the world, Skynet-like doomsday scenarios, or AI taking all jobs. Many claimed that the latest AI advances, based on Large Language Models, are the precursors to Artificial General Intelligence, or even exhibit emergent properties such as consciousness. While claims of consciousness are too bold, solutions that can effectively handle meaning and semantics may make a huge difference in neurodiversity.
  3. Dr. Toby Velte: "Practical Applications of AI in Business" We'll quickly touch on examples of real-world uses of AI today: AI has the capability to make neurosurgery safer, lower the cost, and make it available globally. The rules about how to build consumer loyalty programmes are completely being rewritten using AI. Loyalty programmes can be made dramatically more effective and profitable.
  4. Maria Flores: Maria is a Chartered IT Professional with a Diploma in Business Analysis and over 20 years of experience across various IT roles in organisations of all sizes, from start-ups to multinationals. Currently, she works in Data Protection/Privacy for a global information organisation. In addition to her IT expertise, Maria is a Fellow of Information Privacy, holds a Degree in Law and an MBA. She serves as the secretary of the BCS Business Change SG and has recently completed a Diploma in Privacy Management at Maastricht University. Her dissertation, "AI Fairness by default framework," explores the intersection of law and technology.
  5. Marco Sgroi: Marco is the Generative AI GoToMarket Specialist Lead for Europe South at Amazon Web Services. He has 25+ years of experience in building and managing high-tech organizations. He has received a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California at Berkeley and the Executive MBA from the London Business School.
