Synopsis
Sussex Branch AGM. This will be followed by a talk by Blay Whitby - making an examination of some of the ethical issues raised by computer games and VR.
Computer gaming is nearly as old as computing and now constitutes one of the largest and most profitable areas of the IT industry. Although IT ethics in general has now become a major research area, there is little work specifically on what is and is not ethically acceptable within the context of a game and the responsibilities of games designers for the nature of their games.
Are there limits to what is acceptable within a game?
What, if any, are the moral responsibilities of game designers to limit bad behaviour and/or encourage ethically good behaviour within the context of their products?
There have also been several moral panics about violent games causing real life violence, which serve to complicate any in-depth discussion of these issues. Lastly, there are also exciting possibilities that games and VR could be used to explore ethical consequences and make a positive ethical contribution.
This talk will attempt to give some answers to these questions and will be followed by a chance for the audience to challenge the answers and develop their own views.
