Synopsis
A new smart home lab is being established at Aberystwyth University to facilitate research aimed at supporting independent living in an aging population.
This talk will explore different technologies and technological considerations for supporting not only the resident but also their care circle. This covers technology for monitoring the activity taking place within the home as well as how robots could support independent living in the future. A co-design project with different stakeholders will be presented as a case study. An opportunity to visit the Smart Home will be provided following the talk.
At the start of the meeting, there will be a short AGM for the Mid-Wales Branch. Notices have been sent to members directly.
About the speaker
Dr Patricia Shaw
Dr Patricia Shaw is a Senior Lecturer at Aberystwyth University. After completing her PhD at Durham University in 2010, she moved to Aberystwyth as a post-doctoral researcher developing and implementing mechanisms for the iCub humanoid robot enabling it to learn like a child. More recently she is establishing a new Smart Home Lab at the university to research and develop technology for assisted independent living, building on previous interdisciplinary research and forming strong connections with Health and Social Care providers across Wales. Through engaging with the community, she hopes this research will have a significant impact in improving support, health and wellbeing for people to live independently for longer, especially in rural communities.
