Synopsis
The focus of this immersive workshop is learning how to obtain information useful to practising software developers. Statistics is used as a tool for extracting valuable insights from your data. It’s a hands-on experience, iterating over: one-hour presentation of material, followed by everybody analyzing data for an hour, until end-of-day.
By the end of the workshop you will have learned how to fit equations to data (i.e., regression modelling), select the optimal design for an experiment (e.g., benchmarks), create various kinds of graphs containing data analysis findings, and understand the caveats underlying the statistical claims of significance made in reports and articles.
The presenter is Derek Jones, whose book Evidence-based Software Engineering discusses what is known about software engineering, based on an analysis of all the publicly available data. The book’s pdf+code+all data are freely available
Attendees will need:
- Laptop with R installed
Optional IDEs: freely available - Fluent in at least one programming language (say, have written at least 10K lines of code).
Brief 5-min introduction to using R. - Sixth form level ability to do algebra.
The slides will be available on Github (link sent prior to workshop).
