Synopsis

Within 24 hours of Keir Starmer entering no10, former Prime Minister Tony Blair began renewing calls for identity cards - this time digital ID cards to combat the rising level of legal and illegal migration. These digital IDs would incorporate a person’s passport, driving licence, tax records, qualifications and right to work. The government has rejected these proposals, and have made it clear that it is not their approach.

We will be discussing the pros and cons of digital IDs, and will be considering the wider privacy concerns about the scheme. We will also be looking at some of the wider technology adjacent policies that will be considered and enacted by the new government.
