Event Two and Beyond: the Computer Arts Society into the 2020s
Internationally renowned Computer Art Historian and former chair of the Computer Art Society (CAS) Dr Nick Lambert will discuss its recent evolution and exciting new directions.
The Computer Arts Society was founded in 1968 and installed its first exhibition of computer art at the Royal College of Art in 1969. With a membership drawn from all areas of the arts and the emerging field of information technology, including many highly regarded pioneers, and it flourished as a special interest group within the British Computer Society. Until the mid-1980s it published the computer arts journal PAGE and supported British and international artists with lectures and exhibitions.
Following a hiatus, the Computer Arts Society was re-established in the early 2000s through the CACHe Project at Birkbeck, University of London. Over the past two decades, CAS has cast light on the history of digital art and connected with emerging technologies and concepts. With the advent of NFTs and AI, the mainstream art world has more fully embraced the digital, but CAS continues its mission to document, archive and share past work and chart the future.
