Synopsis
IT systems and infrastructure are complex and expensive. Done well they can provide enormous business benefits. Done badly they can consume a lot of scarce resources with little to show for it. Like it or not, most businesses are now in a 24x7x365 world without any room for error. The IT systems need to provide ever better resilience against failure and data loss, even while being worked on. The applications will have a design life far in excess of the hardware life and the systems will change over time whilst in operational use. The design and implementation of highly available and secure systems requires a more disciplined approach to systems engineering than is common in the IT industry. Leadership and collaboration are essential at all stages to ensure successful delivery and completion of the systems in a timely manner with minimal disruption.
This session will discuss some of the complexities and difficulties of leading mission critical systems projects.
This is a joint event with the Association for Project Management (APM) and the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI).
About the speaker
Colin Butcher

Much of his work involves the mentoring and development of project teams in addition to developing practical solutions to the complex technical and business issues.
Colin has been involved with the world-wide DEC / Compaq / HP community for over 30 years and is a well-known speaker on systems engineering topics with specific interests in availability, performance, security, networking and storage.
He has a 1st class honours degree in mechanical engineering from Leeds University and spent several years as an engineer prior to changing careers in the mid 1980s.
Our events are for adults aged 16 years and over.
