Synopsis
The international standard for data quality, ISO 8000, has been developed by the working group for Industrial Data Quality. The working group, however, has sought to ensure that the standard applies to all types of data.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the professional regulator for nurses, midwives, and nursing associates in the UK. This regulator role demands data that supports a vision of the public receiving safe, effective, and kind care.
To achieve such data, the NMC is implementing systematic and systemic approaches to data quality. These approaches include:
- adoption of ISO 8000;
- master data management - centralising master data assets;
- technical and behavioural data quality improvements
- a centralised “Corporate Dictionary” and Reports Catalogue
By adopting ISO 8000 as part of a structured approach to data quality, the NMC has delivered the following benefits:
- an enterprise-wide view of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion information;
- grounding for a medical-regulation wide data sharing platform;
- foundation for an enterprise-wide view of data quality, reporting to the audit and risk committee
- an enterprise-wide approach for managing master data
- demonstrated that the standard is applicable to a wide range of data across different types of organisation
About the speakers
Tim King (ISO 8000 Convenor)
Tim is a somewhat accidental leader in the subject of data quality. He was in the right place at the right time in 2006 to be appointed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as convenor of the newly created working group, Industrial Data Quality (ISO/TC184/SC4/WG13).
He has since learnt from more than 150 participating international experts in the subject to develop ISO 8000, the international standard for data quality. He is employed by Babcock International, where he has undertaken a large number of consultancy projects to deliver increased value from data.
Jon Alvis (Nursing and Midwifery council)
Jon is a multi-lingual, Terry Pratchett-loving, data-wrangling, Metal revelling (oh yes \M/) strategist, amateur chef, and intelligence handling specialist - he’s worked in the NHS for the better part of 9 years, and in regulation for the last three, currently at the NMC as their Data Governance Manager.
His Big Thing throughout the whole of this time has been getting the right information, to the right people, at the right time, to support them to make better decisions.
Jon’s experience is rich and varied, from being a Theatre Company Technical Manager (and licenced stage pyrotechnician) at university, through studying a Masters in Applied Security Strategy, living in Russia and Argentina and - more recently - achieving the ISO 8000 Master Data Quality Manager qualification provided by ECCMA.
Jon has spoken UK-wide about Predictive Risk Analytics and Population Health, Intelligence Handling and Intelligence Maturity, and most recently was a speaker at Big Data LDN (2020). Jon also provided crisis-management to the NMC, leading the team that delivered the “Covid-19 Temporary Register”, which delivered 14,800 extra Nurses to the NHS at the time of its greatest need.
