Synopsis
BCS supports IT professionals around the world. A large number choose to work as freelancers and via personal professional services firms. Another group are employers utilising IT workers on a flexible contract basis.
Both groups will be impacted by the coming changes to the tax treatment of such people with the IR35 regulations due to come into force in the new tax year after a Covid delay.
We have assembled an expert panel from different segments of the taxation ecosystem to look at the practical changes IT contractors and employers need to make.
About the speakers
Dave Chaplin
Dave Chaplin is the CEO and founder of contracting authority ContractorCalculator and tax compliance firm IR35 Shield.
Dave was an IT contractor before founding ContractorCalculator in 1999. IR35 Shield enables firms, agencies and contractors to remain compliant with the Intermediaries Legislation (IR35) and Off-Payroll legislation. Dave is the author of the Contractors’ Handbook Third Edition and more recently IR35 & Off-Payroll - explained.
He assists with IR35 tax tribunals, has consulted on many occasions for HMRC, advises politicians and Government bodies on freelance tax matters, and is prolifically quoted in the trade and national press. In November 2020, Dave was included in the Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA)’ list of Europe’s 100 most influential leaders in the staffing industry.
Chris Fahey
Chris has worked for some of the biggest names in the industry in his 17 years in the payroll sector. He is widely respected in the industry, working in partnership with agencies and helping them with everything from day-to-day queries to legislation changes and everything in between.
Chris joined Azure Global in November 2019 to help grow their UK business and within his first month, he secured a deal that would transform the business from a UK-only payroll company to an international payroll and HR Solutions provider. Azure Global now has projects in the US, Canada, Poland, UAE, Ireland as well as the UK.
Outside work, Chris was a professional goalkeeper for 17 years, playing in the lower leagues in Scotland. When he retired Chris joined Clyde FC as their Goalkeeper Coach in Scottish League One where he spent three happy and successful years there. Chris has now retired to concentrate on his young family and growing Azure Global.
Marie Pegram
Marie is a Partner and Recruitment Industry Sector Specialist at UHY Hacker Young. Marie has been working with recruitment businesses since 2013, providing taxation, business planning and accounting advice.
Off-Payroll working rules is one of the biggest changes to impact the recruitment industry as well as the world of contracting. Marie has been supporting her clients to prepare for these changes, as well as presenting to wider audiences or helping tailor forums through the UHY network.
