Who really needs a data lake?
Is off the shelf CRM really all it's cracked up to be?
Are Big Tech vendors on your side?
Big Tech products can deliver benefits to organisations, but at a financial cost, surrendering future options to the business plans of the vendors and promoting the use of other products within the Big Tech ecosystem. Is this always the right approach? Do Big Tech always offer sufficient value despite the cost? What about the individual? There is money to be made in acquiring the skills to make the Big Tech products work but this can be short-lived and leave the individual with stranded skills.
This presentation explores these themes and will be followed by the opportunity to ask questions and debate. It will be thought provoking for anyone thinking about getting a new system, making career decisions in software development or influencers grappling with promoting the skills of software engineering versus supporting Big Tech products.
About the speaker
Ron Ballard studied Computer Science (with some other subjects) at Manchester University, graduating in 1973.He worked on the development of a bibliographic database for the British Library and then spent 15 years working for database vendors, building database products, supporting them, building transactional applications and data warehouses using them, and teaching others to use them. From 1996 to 2017 he was an independent database consultant working with big databases in large organisations.
Ron has now retired but keeps himself occupied by writing and speaking about databases, and by volunteering with some major charities to assist them with agile development of data warehouses and migration to new systems. In 2017 Ron published his first book – Relational Databases For Agile Developers - explaining how well relational databases can work with agile development practices.
