Synopsis
During their fieldwork in Nepal, Eleanor Dewar became interested in the use of mobile phones, particularly in connection with e-learning and m-learning. With the rapidly increasing adoption of mobile phones within Nepal and other South Asian countries across all levels of society, this talk builds on her fieldwork around literacy and explores current mobile phone usages and the potentials for m- and e-learning in the South Asian context.
Examining both the practical elements of digital learning in South Asia and the theoretical and pedagogical aspects, Eleanor will expand on currently available learning tools and potential developments in smartphone use for both schooling and lifelong learning.
This presentation originally presented at the previous e-Learning group’s INSPIRE conference has been updated to discuss not only the potentials for smartphone learning but also to address m-learning in the time of COVID.
About the speaker
Eleanor Dewar is an Applied Psychology PhD candidate at the University of Kent.
In 2017 they were awarded an MA in Education, Gender and International Development with Distinction for UCL IOE. The thesis for this MA focused on Nepali women's use of literacy and the wider implications of literacy for education.
Eleanor’s wider research focuses around the interplay of disability, education, pedagogy, gender and technology. They also run their own research consultancy Ocelot Educational Research, works as Interim CEO and Trustee of the disability charity BlueAssist UK and Volunteer Fundraising Lead for Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees.
