Synopsis
First, in 2015, Safe Harbour bit the dust. That has been followed by the striking down of Safe Harbour’s successor - the Privacy Shield - in July 2020, with standard contractual clauses surviving but needing additional safeguards. So international data transfers from the EU to the USA, (post-Brexit) to the UK, and indeed to other ‘third countries’, will need to change. About the speakers
Daniel Aldridge BCS Senior Policy Manager
Dan works to develop and deliver the BCS strategic policy agenda in areas including professionalism and standards, cyber and data security, health and social care informatics, digital skills and transformation, equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Prior to BCS, Dan worked for the Office for Students and HEFCE overseeing policy areas related to higher education and skills including the delivery of projects tackling hate crime and online harm. Dan also worked for Stonewall, the LGBT charity as policy and programmes manager working with governments, private industry and civil society to drive inclusion in key areas of public life.
Dan originally studied Psychology at the Universities of Exeter and Northumbria and is a member of the Chartered Institute for IT and Association of Project Managers.
Paul Eastwood, Associate Director, Tughan Solicitors
Paul began his training with Tughan as an apprentice solicitor in 2013 and is now an Associate Director in Tughans’ Contracts & Technology department. Paul has a wealth of experience in Commercial/Contract law, particularly relating to partnership and collaboration agreements between public and private sector bodies; service agreements covering a broad range of services; and back-to-back agreements.
Paul regularly drafts, reports on, negotiates and co-ordinates execution of commercial agreements. He has experience in public procurement law and is well versed in the various requirements upon public bodies, both in procurement of goods, services and works and also in performance of procured contracts.
Paul also has significant expertise in data protection law and has been assisting a wide range of clients on their responsibilities under the revised data protection regime and associated legislation (including around the use of personal data for direct marketing).
Chiara Rustici
Chiara is an independent academic and data regulation analyst. Formerly a research fellow with Italy's CNR, teaching fellow in Jurisprudence at the University of Genoa, and research scholar at the Universities of Milan and Edinburgh, she did Chair the BCS Law Specialist Group and is part of the BCS governance team with the PPP committee.
She sits on the editorial board of the Journals Frontiers in Blockchain and Journal of Data Protection and Privacy and has published extensively on legal reasoning for academic publishers Computer Law Review International, Journal of Data Protection and Privacy, Bloomberg, O'Reilly books, Ragion Pratica, Contemporary Political Theory.
In 2019 she was recognised by her peers in the inaugural DPO200 list compiled by the GDPR Institute as one of the ‘individuals who have made significant contributions to the privacy and security sectors’
