Synopsis
The talk will begin with an introduction to the open source model. Open and commercial interests can actually be well aligned and the development shows the adoption of the open model in science and industry. The importance of open source hardware and software will be highlighted in terms of its market relevance, using examples and by referencing company commitments.
The role and activities of the Open Source Specialist Group (OSSG) in furthering the open source agenda will be explained. The OSSG are the experts within the BCS for open hardware and software.

About the speaker
Dr. Julian Kunkel, Department of Computer Science, University of Reading
Dr. Kunkel is a Lecturer at the Computer Science Department at the University of Reading and member secretary for the BCS Open Source Specialist Group. Previously, he worked as a postdoc in the research department of the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) that partners with the Scientific Computing group at the Universität Hamburg. In his research on storage in High-Performance Computing, open-source software is omnipresent. He started his open-source journey with SUSE Linux 5.2 in 1998; since then, he has been an enthusiast for open and free* software and hardware.
