This event aims to put our use of plastics into perspective and discuss the engineering realities of how we can mitigate the environmental effects through a more sustainable approach and outline some technologies which could be used to replace or reduce our plastic consumption.
Prior to the event the audience will be invited to submit questions and participate in a pre-debate discussion on social media IMechE Wessex Facebook. The most popular questions arousing the most debate will be selected and put to the experts on the night. Synopsis:
In the century since Leo Baekeland first created Bakelite, plastic's versatility, durability and ability to be moulded into almost any shape has revolutionised product design and facilitated a consumer revolution. It is estimated that humans have created nearly 10 billion tonnes of plastics since the 1950's and these amazing man-made materials have dramatically changed our lives. This event aims to put our use of plastics into perspective and discuss the engineering realities of how we can mitigate the environmental effects through a more sustainable approach and outline some technologies which could be used to replace or reduce our plastic consumption.

Dr Jeremy Woods, will give a talk about developing a sustainable bio-economy to deliver the 4 securities: food, energy, environment and social development. He will discuss our historic use of plastics and alternatives for the future.
Mr Tarquin Crouch, will present the case for a more sustainable use of plastics through the application of modern technology and engineering.
Following the presentations, the audience will be invited to engage our experts to discuss the future of plastics. Three of our local MPs will be attending, you will be able to discuss with them the challenges involved in any potential future national, regional or global legislation or agreements around this issue.
After the event there will be finger food & wine (soft drinks for U18) and an opportunity for Networking and engaging further with our speakers and MPs.
