SYNOPSIS
OpenStreetMap (OSM; openstreetmap.org) is a global project to collect free mapping data using sources such as GPS devices and aerial imagery.
While OSM provides detailed web maps of the kind produced by Google, the real power of the project is the raw data itself, which can be used in third-party applications - to quote the founder of the project - "in unexpected ways".
This technical talk will give a summary of the history of the project, how you can contribute, and how you can obtain raw OpenStreetMap data to use in your own applications. The talk will also give examples of how OSM data has been used in third-party applications such as custom map rendering, route finding and augmented reality.
