The IBM Hursley Campus at its heart is based around an 18th century mansion. It has a very rich history dating back centuries, in many ways it is a real life Downton Abbey. Prior to IBM moving in it was already a centre of innovation, during WWII Vickers Supermarine were bombed out of Southampton, requisitioned the house, moved in and designed the Spitfire there. In 1958 IBM moved in where it became the the focal point for research and development in the UK and has remained so ever since. Some of IBMs most valued offerings are developed here, from transaction processing with CICS, messaging with MQ and HyperLedger for Blockchain. The campus being based around an 18th century grade 2* listed mansion along with a mix of buildings dating from the 50s to the noughties was not built with sustainability in mind. It has set its present owners the challenge of being innovative to make the campus a greener more sustainable place to work. This talk focuses on a wide variety of projects and initiatives around the campus to help improve its green credentials, make it a vibrant place to work and a showcase for visitors. There are super size projects involving the data centre which consumes the energy of a small town through to winners of an innovation competition with a green theme.

Headline Speaker: Dave Locke Innovation and IoT Champion at IBM
Dave is Chief Innovation Officer for IBM UK Labs Campus. His mission is to infuse innovation into all aspects of campus life turning the campus into a showcase for IBM's people, projects and technology. For the physical campus this involves the use of IBM and partner technologies to solve real world problems, for employees the opportunity to grow their careers and showcase their talent.
Dave is a long time IBMer who has had multiple roles and worked on many technologies across the campus. Starting as a developer on the mainframe helping to enhance IBM's industry leading transaction processing system CICS, he then worked his way down through progressively smaller systems from mid range to PC and then pervasive on a mix of messaging and integration products. For the later half of his career he worked on the smallest of the small on what is today called the Internet of Things (IoT). Connecting up "Things" is not new or novel but the approach taken and emerging technologies enable a vast range of new and innovative uses. Dave is an evangelist for IoT both in business helping to build IBM's IoT ecosystem and outside in education and for fun. Dave is big proponent of opensource and open standards and has helped evolve MQTT both on the OASIS standards committee and Eclipse IoT open source projects.
To round off the story, there was a life prior to IBM, Dave started his career working as a developer and architect in a small software house of 20 people, before moving to B&Q working on the IT system for a new concept store, the Home Center that sadly never took off.
