This presentation looks at the BCS Code of Conduct and other ethical frameworks in the context of data science and meeting the needs of ‘early career’ data scientists.
With the UK government in 2017-18 spending “nearly £6million on data scientists”[1] and a serious shortage in industry of relevant skills in business intelligence and big data projects , there is an urgent need for ‘data workers’. Many Universities are running Data Science programmes, and the government Office of National Statistics (ONS) has a Data Science Campus with a “target to deliver 500 qualified data scientists for government by 2021”[2]. The combination of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) brings a level of complexity that requires expertise – deep knowledge and a range of skills – including an ethical approach.
