Digital Accessibility Specialists provide support with the design of accessible solutions, best practice, audit of digital content, as well as technical support for digital assistive technology. The specific tasks undertaken vary depending on what needs to be achieved at any particular time.
Digital Accessibility Specialists play a key role in advocating, supporting, and presenting to the broader disability community. In their daily work, they need to interact with a range of professionals including software engineers, managers, product owners as well as assistive technology users and providers.
Core skills include:
- Applying accessibility guidelines and security best practices.
- Using hardware-and software-based assistive technologies and conducting testing against a variety of platforms.
- Using troubleshooting methods to identify issues relating to a user’s assistive technology.
- Creating and presenting business cases, reports and documentation appropriate for the target audience.
- Utilising interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective and credible professional relationships.
This standard aims to provide the apprentice with all necessary resources to successfully learn, practice, and complete the skills highlighted as imperative for performing the roles of accessibility consultant, accessibility specialist, accessibility subject matter expert, accessibility tester and digital accessibility specialist, which is shown by the apprentice’s successful completion of 3 AMs: one work-based project report with presentation with questions and answers, one knowledge test and one professional discussion.
