BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, is looking for a Legal Officer to join our collaborative and forward-thinking Legal Team, supporting the Senior Legal Counsel, Trainee Solicitor (due to qualify this summer), and other members of the Legal and Compliance Team working across the BCS Group of organisations.

This permanent, part-time role (28 hours per week) offers a flexible hybrid working arrangement, with a minimum of two days a week in our Swindon office and the remainder working from home. The role comes with a competitive salary of £22,800 p.a. (full-time equivalent: £28,500 p.a.) and an exceptional package of benefits.

About the role

The post-holder will be responsible for supporting the Legal Team with the provision of legal services to BCS including providing advice primarily on commercial law and related matters, including contract drafting and negotiation, with exposure to a variety of other areas of law. The post-holder will also have responsibility for the effective management of the Legal Team’s case management system, and will liaise with a variety of stakeholders, including managers, employees and external providers on legal processes and matters.

Key responsibilities:

  • Advise on, draft, negotiate and finalise a wide range of BCS legal agreements and third-party legal agreements.
  • Provide pragmatic and commercially appropriate advice on commercial law and related matters.
  • Provide assistance and support to other members of the Legal Team on more complex matters.
  • Work alongside and Support the Compliance Team as appropriate.
  • Respond to legal enquiries from BCS colleagues, customers and suppliers.
  • Respond to enquiries sent to the team inbox, allocate matters raised using the Legal Team’s contract management system, and support the timely issue of contracts for signature.
  • Support the Legal Team in ensuring that BCS is legally compliant and that legal risks are identified and mitigated.
  • Regularly monitor and provide relevant updates on changes in the law to key staff within BCS.
  • Continually identify and consider ways in which to make improvements to the legal team’s systems, processes and procedures.
  • Provide administrative support to the Legal Team, and the Head of Legal and Compliance, where requested.
  • Filing/registrations for BCS and its subsidiaries on Companies House and the Charities Commission.
  • Assist with the creation and provision of regular internal training sessions and presentations.
  • Research and provide advice on specific ad hoc projects delegated by Head of Legal and Compliance.
  • Due to the nature of this business area, there will be a high degree of confidential and sensitive data to be appropriately managed and disseminated; any mistakes or errors could have a material and/or negative impact on individuals, BCS and external stakeholders.
  • This role requires confidence, ability to work autonomously and on own initiative.
  • Flexibility to adjust responsibilities as required from time to time by management.
  • Continually look at ways to make improvements to systems, processes and procedures.

Who are we looking for?

Education and qualifications
  • A degree in law or commensurate experience is essential;
  • A legal qualification (Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, National Association of Licensed Paralegals, or similar) or completion of the Legal Practice Course (desirable but not essential).
Experience
  • Proven experience of at least 6 months gained in private practice or in-house within a paralegal or legal advisory role is essential;
  • Experience of contract drafting and negotiation is essential;
  • Experience in commercial law is essential;
  • Experience in employment law (desirable but not essential).

  • Strong analytical skills with an ability to identify and appropriately handle any legal and commercial issues and any associated risks;
  • Ability to communicate and negotiate in writing and verbally;
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team;

Knowledge
  • Commercial law;
  • Employment law knowledge is desirable but not essential;
  • Knowledge of the IT/charity/training and development sector is desirable but not essential.
Special conditions
  • Attending off-site meetings at BCS London or other locations may occasionally be required; 
  • Out-of-hours working will be very limited but may be required to complete time sensitive tasks.
